Site releases
- 2026-10-17: r23 (17 Oct 2026): European gas storage
- New "Gas storage (Europe)" layer: 134 underground storage sites in 22 countries (GIE Storage Database, Storage Map 2026, data as of Aug 2026), 1,569 TWh of working gas, drawn as hollow teal diamonds sized by capacity and appearing from their start-up year on the slider. Locations approximate (town level, OpenStreetMap Nominatim).
- Panel per site: operators, type (depleted field, salt cavern, aquifer, rock cavern), status, start-up year, working gas (TWh, rough bcm), withdrawal and injection capacity, storage-group notes.
- Daily fill from GIE AGSI+ via /api/gas-storage-fill (facility, storage group or country level, labelled, with gas day). Needs the AGSI_API_KEY secret; until then the panel says fill is not connected yet.
- 2026-10-17: r22 (17 Oct 2026): where Europe's oil comes from (stage 1)
- New "Europe oil imports" layer: monthly schematic flow lines from origin countries into the EU-27 (extra-EU, Eurostat nrg_ti_oilm) or the UK (HMRC trade statistics), sized by kt, following the slider (latest published month when the slider is later).
- Panel with EU-27/UK and crude/products tabs, origin table for the month, stacked monthly chart of the top 8 origins plus Other, flags (Kazakh CPC Blend via Novorossiysk, Russian embargo and Druzhba exemption, product hubs), and gaps and checks: Eurostat statistical difference, balance vs partner totals, unattributed volume.
- European crude production for the same month (Eurostat; UK after Oct 2020 from JODI-Oil).
- 2026-10-17: 17 Oct 2026: r21
- The whole North Sea: Norwegian, Dutch and Danish oil and gas fields now appear on the map beside the UK, coloured by monthly output on the same scale and following the time slider. Data comes from their regulators: the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (Sodir), NLOG and the Danish Energy Agency.
- Click a Norwegian, Dutch or Danish field for its production chart, operator, status and a link to the regulator's page. Norwegian platforms, terminals and pipelines, and Dutch and Danish installations, show with the Installations and Pipelines layers.
- New chart view "UK vs Norway, NL, DK" stacks the four countries' output.
- 2026-10-16: 16 Oct 2026: r20
- Story: a new moment for Preese Hall (April 2011), the first UK shale well fracked and the 2.3 ML tremor that paused fracking. The shale layer switches on there and stays on. 10 moments.
- Plain pages for the top 50 fields, the shale basins and the fabrication yards (see About & sources), each linking into the map. A yard can now be linked directly (#y=).
- Faster first load: scripts no longer block the page.
- 2026-10-16: 16 Oct 2026: r19
- UK shale now appears on the time slider when each basin became active: Bowland from Preese Hall-1 (Aug 2010), Northern Ireland from the Tamboran licence (Apr 2011), Cleveland from the KM8 well (Jun 2013), the Weald and Midland Valley from their BGS studies (May and Jun 2014). Before Aug 2010 the layer says there was no shale activity yet. In the Story it switches on at the shale moment.
- Ask the data: more careful shale answers (all three fracking earthquakes, exact intervals, the Lodhia 2023 and Clancy 2018 figures).
- 2026-10-16: 16 Oct 2026: r18
- Play: captions keep up with the date at every speed; old captions are skipped instead of queued.
- The chart is taller on short screens, and its latest value uses the same 2 640 format.
- Ask the data can open an event (for example Piper Alpha) and move to its month.
- 2026-10-16: 16 Oct 2026: r17
- UK shale: ten sourced shale events on the timeline and in the Story (each opens its basin), basin labels with the central (P50) estimate from zoom 5, a clearer basin panel ("In place is not recoverable" comes first), and a years-of-demand sentence rounded to 5 years.
- Play and Story: "Play from here" eases back to the whole UK North Sea unless you have moved the map; the chart switches tab with the Story and comes back to yours afterwards; captions show the date and no longer block clicks.
- One production format everywhere: 2 640 kboe/d.
- 2026-10-14: 14 Oct 2026: v2
- Time filter: every layer uses one rule. At June 1975 only what existed then is shown; wind and tidal leases are dated by their leasing round, installations by their host field. "Show future assets" draws later ones as faint dashed ghosts, and discovered-but-undeveloped fields as dots.
- Faster first paint: the app no longer waits for map tiles; the loading box is gone.
- Play: the camera frames the North Sea, fields flash and are named as they start, captions for key moments (with optional Pause at events), the chart draws as you go with a 12-month average, and running totals for barrels produced, HMRC receipts and fields producing. Default speed 1 year a second; keys [ and ] change speed. Story cards have "Play from here"; the end card links to the Story.
- 2026-10-14: 14 Oct 2026: first-visit fix
- First visit now opens on the normal map. The guided story no longer starts by itself (on phones its first step opened the Argyll event full screen); the Story button is highlighted instead.
- Event links: Copy link on an event panel now includes the event (#e=...), and opening that link opens the event. Unknown parameters (utm, twclid, fbclid and the like) are ignored.
- The AAIB Crown copyright credit now shows only on events sourced from AAIB reports.
- 2026-10-14: 14 Oct 2026: usability release
- Guided story: 8 key moments from Argyll in 1975 to the latest month (Story button, with Skip).
- Big headline: date and UKCS output beside Play, with change vs the Jan 2000 peak and vs 12 months earlier.
- Every view is a link: month, open field, layers, chart mode, Brent options, event filters, speed, loop and pinned month are kept in the address bar, including during playback. Share copies the link and downloads a PNG.
