UK and European refineries

The UK has 6 working refineries. The 4 main ones (Fawley, Stanlow, Pembroke, Humber) have 46.2 million tonnes a year of crude distillation capacity between them (DESNZ, July 2025). Grangemouth stopped processing crude in April 2025 and Lindsey in August 2025; both stay on the map as closed sites. Across Europe the map shows 68 more refineries from the EU's industrial emissions register, which gives location, operator and CO₂ but not capacity.

Crude landed at UK ports (2025)

HMRC records crude imports by the port of entry. This is crude landed, not refinery intake, but it shows where each refinery's imported crude comes ashore:

HMRC records crude imports by the port where customs entry is made. This is crude LANDED at the port, not refinery intake: it misses UK crude delivered by pipeline (Forties to Kinneil, Brent to Sullom Voe) in some months cargoes were recorded with no port (notably September 2022 to May 2023), and one port can serve several sites.

The EU register gives location, operator and emissions but not refinery capacity. We map E-PRTR activity 1(a) facilities that reported at least 0.2 Mt CO2 (2024, or their latest year), drop gas plants and production sites, and merge split entries. Capacity is shown only where DESNZ (UK) publishes it; the country totals from Concawe are a cross-check. CO2 is the facility total to air, an annual activity proxy, not throughput. Czech and Slovak refineries are not registered under activity 1(a) and are missing. No free data gives refinery crude intake, crude slate or product output per refinery in Europe (company-level returns are confidential); per-refinery figures need Kpler, Vortexa or Argus.
